Breast Augmentation with Implants

Breast Augmentation is the surgical term for enlarging or reshaping the female breasts by the insertion of implants. It makes breasts bigger and fuller and improves symmetry of the breasts, and/or restores breast volume lost after childbirth, weight loss or due to the ageing process.

Candidates for Breast Augmentation with Implants –

There are three types of patient who need this operation. Firstly, those who have never developed breast tissue and secondly, those who have found their breast tissue has decreased after the reasons mentioned above. The third group of patients are simply those who to increase the size of their breasts to improve their appearance and confidence.

The Procedure –

It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure which may be done under sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on patient and surgeon preference. The complete procedure takes approximately 1-2 hours. Sometimes if the tissue is thin, implants are placed behind the muscle. The small incision (usually 4-8 cm) is typically made through the armpit (axilla), creases under your breast, or around the areola depending on your body, the type of implant, and how much enlargement is to be done. After this, the surgeon lifts the breast tissue, creates a pocket in the chest/breast area then puts the breast implant into a pocket above or below the pectoral muscle, but the placement of the implant underneath the pectoral muscle interfere less with mammograms and breastfeeding. After the implant is in place, the skin is then closed with small stitches and a light dressing applied.

Risks and complications –

After breast augmentation, it is normal for all women to experience swelling, bruising and numbness. A very small number may also encounter infection. In a minority of cases, the body may react to the implants by creating a hard capsule of scar tissue around them. This is correctable. The risks can be reduced by the message which shall be explained after the operation.

Downtime and Recovery –

At Aesthetic Beauty Centre, we recommend a post-operative recovery time of 6-10 weeks, sometimes it can take even longer for all the post-operative swelling and bruising to disappear and the implants to settle into their final position. But you can resume your light activities without any physical exertion after one week of your surgery.

The Breasts Implants Result –

Breast augmentation results are immediately visible which gives you a more youthful-looking figure. Sutures are usually removed in seven to 10 days. After some time the post-surgical swelling will subside and inconspicuous scars by incision will fade. These breast implants can last for a decade but often they last longer without any issues. They do not affect breastfeeding. Following your surgeon’s instructions is essential to the success of your surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions –

Do the implants ever rupture?

It is possible for silicone implants to rupture spontaneously, but this is extremely rare. In the unlikely event that this does occur (due to a strong force as in a car accident) the gel-like nature of the filling means that the substance will stay in place and will not leak or migrate outside the casing so removal is easy.

How long do implants last?

The average life expectancy of an implant is probably around 7-15 years, but this will depend on many factors.

Will implants affect my ability to breastfeed?

No, absolutely not, the implants will not affect breastfeeding.
